Shelly Davis Piano Studio Summer Session
New to piano lessons or to Shelly Davis? Read this section first.
Private summer lessons give students several advantages including reviewing and reinforcing learned skills, moving forward with new piano skills, getting a head start on the next level of theory, and a relaxed schedule with more time to simply enjoy playing the piano.
The summer session is an excellent opportunity for new students to give piano a trial run on a short-term basis.

Music Makers: Composition Edition
“Imagine it. Create it. Play it.”
Students may choose to spend some of their summer sessions creating one original piece of music. Over the course of the summer, I will guide them through bite-sized creative challenges that gradually become a finished composition.
By the end of the summer, each student will have:
- An original piece
- A title and cover page
- A notated copy (handwritten or typed)
- A performance or recording
- Optional: a “composer’s note” explaining their inspiration
Students may choose prompts like:
- “A Rainy Day”
- “My Pet’s Adventure”
- “Secret Castle”
- “Video Game Victory”
- “Summer at the Beach”
- “A Mystery in the Woods”
…or they may create their own inspiration!
Learning by Listening
One of the most valuable elements of playing any instrument (and often the most overlooked!) is listening to music.
This summer we will spend dedicated time listening to music of all different styles and genres. As we listen, we will notice:
- “The Cast” – what instruments or voice are making this music?
- Heartbeat – what is the meter or time signature of this music? How fast or slow does it go?
- Timestamps – what is the structure of the music? When does the intro end and the first verse begin? Is there more than one verse? What other elements make up this song?
- The Landscape – what key is this song in? What is the chord progression? How does the melody line move?
Click here to download your Learning by Listening worksheet. You should print one worksheet for each song you want to study.
When you hear a song you would like to play, you can click here to get your Plot the Landscape worksheet and make notes about the melody and chord changes.
The Spotify playlist below has a few songs you might consider listening to. What songs should we add to the list?
